Our Books

Chronicle Books, 2008

Art of the Modern Movie Poster has been called a "truly magnificent, if not monumental" work. Featuring sharp mini-essays by Dave Kehr, this beautiful, full-color 516-page doorstopper of a book is an embarrassment of riches" (Film Comment, 2009). A "stunning work of visual scholarship" (NPR, 2008). An "encyclopedic collection...from West Side Story to In the Mood for Love via Attack of the 50ft Woman, more than 1,500 selections place film posters firmly in the Pop Art pantheon" (Harper's Bazaar, 2009).

Harry N. Abrams, 2005

The Independent Movie Poster Book, a full-color volume, "celebrates the brash 'n bold aesthetic of indie cinema" (Hollywood Life, 2005), with over 200 "iconic images from indie flicks by auteurs such as Pedro Almodóvar, the Coen brothers and Seijun Suzuki" (Time Out New York, 2005). Entertainment writer Dave Kehr places the images in context with lively and illuminating text.

Mark Batty Publisher, 2008

Translating Hollywood, a "handsome hardcover volume" (Leonard Maltin, 2008) "highlighting fascinating local interpretations of predominantly American films" (Vanity Fair, 2008), reveals the major role played by graphic design in movie poster advertising and promotion around the world.

Linen Backing

Linen-backing is a technique used for the archival preservation of paper. During linen-backing, a poster is cleaned and affixed to Japan paper and then mounted onto rollable canvas. All adhesives used are wheat-based. A gentle bleach may be applied to even out paper tone. Condition issues such as paper loss, fold separation and more may be repaired and touched up using water-soluble pigments.

So should you linen-back your poster? In our opinion, there are two main reasons to linen-back. Some larger posters were printed in multiple sheets (e.g. Italian quattro, Japanese STB). Linen-backing is ideal for multi-piece posters. Another good reason to linen-back is if a poster has serious condition issues and deteriorates with handling.

We also offer paper-backing, which is a similar technique to linen-backing, however we consider it to be somewhat more invasive. Many layers of paper from the back of the poster are stripped off. The remaining top layer of paper is mounted onto stiff acid-free paper stock. Paper-backed posters are not rollable.

Linen-backing takes about 3-4 weeks. Costs start at $100 for smaller posters and increase depending on size and how much restoration is necessary. If you would like an estimate, please contact us.

While browsing our collection, you may encounter the term "re-release" or you may see the letter "R" precede a year, eg. R1976. Studios and distributors often re-release popular movies into theaters. For example, Casablanca has been released in theaters over a dozen times since it's first release in 1942. Re-release posters are not reproductions. Rather, they are original, studio or distributor-issued posters created for theatrical re-releases of popular films. In fact, some re-release posters are more sought after than original release posters for their unique artwork or design. North by Northwest and The Hustler are two examples of this.

Condition Gradings

Our condition grading terminology is defined as follows. If you have questions regarding the condition of a specific poster, feel free to get in touch.

May have minimal wear with possible pinholes in the borders and/or slight fold wear. Minor tape on the back and very small tears are also allowable as is slight fading.
Very Good to Fine
In slightly more used condition than fine, but still very presentable.
Very Good
May have some fold separation, border staining or small tears, but the image is still relatively clean.
Good to Very Good
Slightly below average used condition. Can use restoration but is still fairly presentable.
Below average used condition.
Fair to Good
Significant condition issues, requires linen-backing.
Major condition issues, requires linen-backing.

Most movie posters prior to 1990 were folded by the printer—factory folded, as it were—before being shipped to theaters. When a condition grading includes the word "folded," that usually refers to factory folds.

Poster Sizes

Most countries have a set of standard movie poster sizes. For example, in the US, most movie posters sizes are based on the one sheet which is approximately 27x41 inches. Most European movie poster sizes are based on the ISO 216 international paper size standard. Virtually all poster size designations throughout the site conform to a size standard. Actual sizes can vary slightly by fractions of an inch, up to a full inch. If you need an exact poster size, please contact us before purchasing and we will be happy to provide exact measurements.

The following poster sizes were/are almost always printed in multiple sheets. If you come across one of these sizes, you can assume was printed in multiple sheets unless otherwise stated. There are other unusual multi-sheet sizes that are not listed here. If a poster size is very large—over 5 feet say—then it's likely a multi-sheet poster. Linen-backing would be required to join multi-sheet posters prior to framing.
